JUGS #97--Technique Week & Whimsical Wednesday "Back to School"

This week Just Us Girls challenged us to alter a notebook and Whimsical Wednesday challenged us to create something for back to school.  As I get ready to head back to my classroom, these were very timely challenges.  This year students will have a writing composition notebook to use as their writing journal.  One of their first homework assignments will to decorate the cover and make it personal.  That's exactly what I did with mine.  Because this journal will be getting a lot of wear and tear, I decided to keep it very simple without all those 3D embellishments that I just love.  I did use library pockets that I plan to put 3x5 cards in to keep track of books read to model good writing.  The black cat has a very personal meaning to me.  My black cat, Pet Peeve--known better as Peevey, died last February.  Though my students never met him in person, they grew to love him with all the stories I told and wrote about him.  Though I now have an 18-week old kitten, Catapult, Peevey continues to be missed.

My beloved Peevey

  2. Love the notebook idea - when I eventually head back to the classroom, I'm going to have to try that one (well, if I can get over my "neat and organized" gene - I'm envisioning what 8 and 9 year olds would come up with to decorate their books...and how 2 weeks into the school year, all their hard work would be MY hard work trying to keep the decor from falling off). I think I may not be ready yet. (; Hehehe.

Love your pretty kitty picture - I recently read a pet sympathy card that said this: "Heaven is filled with love....so your little pet should feel right at home there...you gave your pet such a wonderful place on earth." I loved this - we lost a dog several years ago, and it broke our hearts. Every time someone tells me of the loss of their pet, I know exactly how they feel. Hoping your heart heals, and that your new kitty can help the healing...and make new memories to treasure.

  3. What a great project! I love the alterd notebook and the fact that you personalized it with a black kitty. I too have a black kitty and she just turned 16! So I know someday soon I will have to say goodbye to her too. Thanks for playing at Whimsical Wednesdays!

  5. This is such a lovely, personal altered notebook and I'm so glad you shared it. Keeping your sweet kitty close in heart (and hand) is beautiful and I love that you shared so many stories with your students. Furbabies are so special. Sending you extra hugs as you continue to heal! (The notebook is beautiful, too... I love the colors and the library pockets. The kitty is the most gorgeous part, of course.) Thank you for playing along with us at Whimsical Wednesdays!

    Hugs and blessings! :o)

  11. Your note book is fabulous. You said you chose to keep it simple, however, it is still so pretty and eye catching. How sweet that you personalized it with your little kitty on the cover. My daughter had a teacher that always told them stories about her Newfoundland "Wendy". My daughter used to get so exited to hear them. I think it is so special that you share/shared stories of your beloved kitty. It has been my experience that the kids love it, and they really do grow to love that animal as if they had met it. I hope you are enjoying your new Kitty. I really enjoyed reading your post and your project. Thank you for joining us over at Whimsical Wednesdays.
